Academic advising is a collaborative partnership between the student and the advisor. As your advisor, I will do my utmost to provide you with the tools, information, and resources that you need in order to succeed in the university setting. At the same time, this is your life, and you are in the driver’s seat. The decision to thrive and succeed is ultimately yours to make. As an advisor, my goal is to provide the right resources so you can make that choice. Together we will make goals, and I will help you achieve them.

My Advising Philosophy

My mission as an academic advisor is to facilitate student success. I want to give students the tools they need to succeed, not only in academic courses, but in choosing who they want to be when they leave college. I want to provide information, guidance, and choices. I gauge my success by my students’ ability to take ownership of their learning and their futures.

I am committed to being open, welcoming, and empathetic because before I can help students, they must be willing to meet with me. I do my utmost to ground my advising in established theory and best practices. However, I am fully cognizant that students are individuals, each with unique perspectives, experiences, and expectations, and so I strive for flexibility and understanding.

As an advisor, my primary goal is to give my students as many tools as possible. To best enable this, I seek to build partnerships with campus resources and faculty. I hope to be able to listen to students and open a dialogue with them, to best find out how I can help in their individual situations. By developing relationships with other members of the campus community, I hope to be able to immediately recommend the correct resources to each student’s unique case.

Perhaps most importantly, I want my advising to be characterized by adaptability and a willingness to grow and improve. As an advisor, I never want to close myself off to new learning. I know that I can learn from every interaction I have with students and fellow professionals. The successful academic advisor is curious, receptive, knowledgeable, and committed to building professional relationships. These are the qualities that inform my advising goals and practices.
